Wednesday A wet and windy morning across most of England, Wales and southern England. The rain is going to be heavy at times as it tracks north, with the winds reaching gale force. Rain affects the east of Scotland toom whilst more northern areas of England, western Scotland and Northern Ireland should be mainly dry to start the day. However, rain is going to be heading northwards with wet weather across most of northern England and eastern Scotland by late afternoon. It could be a very wet day in parts of the Midlands and Wales, although conditions turn more showery to the south. The best weather again in western Scotland. Highs at 6C in northern Scotland, 12C in southern England.

Wednesday Night An unsettled night with rain through much of Wales, southwest England and northern England. Most of Scotland will be wet too, as will be Ireland, especially the east. Some heavy showers across centrasl and southern England. Staying windy too for most with those winds to gale force, although lighter across Wales and southwest England.

Thursday Low pressure is going to be cenred over northern England on Thursday and will be dominating conditions throughout the day. Strong winds surround the low, especially in Scotland and Ireland as well as southeast England, although these winds easing later. It will be a wet day across northern England, Scotland and Wales as well as Ireland. Elsewhere it will be brighter with sunny spells, but heavy showers will become widespread and thundery. Highs at 14C in the south, 6C in northern Scotland.

Friday The pressure flow becomes more slack into Friday, although still dominated by low pressure. An area of rain affects northern England and Wales, with snow on the hills of northern England for a time. However, this should quickly fade through the morning, becoming drier in the afternoon. A chilly day in Scotland with a mix of sunshine and showers, these wintry on hills. Further showers for England and eastern Wales. Highs at 6 to 14C.

Morning Call: Plenty of sunshine - A cold start, May 16 - 06:04

Sunny for most after a cold start Good morning, It's certainly been a nippy old night. Temperatures have been around or even below freezing for many central, eastern and northern parts of the country, but now thankfully, with the sun rising, so are the temperatures.

This morning should be a fair one overall. There is a risk of a few showers developing over the high ground of the Midlands and northern England through this afternoon, but for the vast majority of the country it should be staying dry with more sunshine.

The exception will be Scotland where showers are going to be forming, and there is the risk of some more persistent rain affecting the east coast for a time. Further west cloud is going to be increasing, as it will in Ireland with some more persistent rain arriving in western Scotland and western Ireland this evening.

Have a great day. Simon me at simon.keeling@weatheronline.co.uk

Week ahead: Cool and damp - Better in the north, May 16 - 12:57

The pressure pattern over the coming week shows low pressure to the south of the country and high pressure to the north. This results in a northeasterly airflow and periods of rain at times, mostly over England and eastern Wales. With the pressure being high to the north Scotland and Wales as well as Ireland will have drier weather, although even here there will be rain at times. Temperatures will be on the cool side at first due to the northeast wind, but then becoming milder in the south later. For the weather for the next few days click here Saturday 19/5/12 The area of low pressure is off the west coast of Cornwall on Saturday. An occluded front extends northeast from the low bringing cloud and outbreaks of rain across parts of west wales and northern England. A warm day through southern England with showers, some of them heavy, but some sunny spells too. Showers affecting central Scotland, but the far north should be staying dry. Highs at 19C in southern England, 8C in northern Scotland. Sunday 20/5/12 Low pressure remains to the south of the country on Sunday with high pressure to the north. A northeasterly flow persists and a front will bring cloud and outbreaks of rain through Ireland and Scotland. Elsewhere it should be brighter, although with a fair amount of cloud and some showers. Highs at 9 to 14C.

Monday 21/5/12 Low pressure is again over the south of the country on Monday. This brings cloud and outbreaks of rain, most of it across eastern England. Scotland, west Wales and western England as well as Ireland should be drier with sunny spells. Highs at just 8C on eastern coasts, 15C in western areas. Tuesday 22/5/12 Low pressure east of the country on Tuesday, and another area of low pressure developing to the west. For most of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and western England the day should be dry with sunny spells. To the east it will be cloudier with some outbreaks of rain and drizzle at times. Temperatures at 7 to 16C. Wednesday 23/5/12 Periods of rain spreading north through Ireland, west Wales, west Scotland and western parts of England on Wednesday. Drier weather to the east with some sunny spells here. Highs at 9 to 17C. Thursday 24/5/12 Cloud and periods of rain for Ireland and western Scotland as well as the west of Wales today. More eastern and southern areas should be drier with sunny spells here. Highs at 10 to 18C.

Month ahead: Valid from 16/05 to 15/06 2012 - An elusive summer, May 16 - 16:34

Where is the spring and the summer.....That was once yours and mine? ANDERSON, STIG / ANDERSSON, BENNY GORAN BROR / ULVAEUS, BJOERN K. That sentiment has been echoing around my mind for some time and through the shorter term anything resembling either late spring or early summer looks like being as elusive as it seems to have been since that all too early burst of spring-like weather back in March. I do have a belief that at least temperatures will be recovering to nearer normal values, interspersed with short warm and rather humid conditions delivered primarily through imported parcels during the transition of low pressure systems. This may give a hint that the pattern will through the short term at least remain rather unsettled in nature with further spells of rather heavy rain at times...at least Mother Nature is attempting to do her level best to redress at least some of the rainfall deficit...so we can't have it always! There is the prospect of a build of pressure later in the month, exactly where is debatable, although I believe that it'll be to the north or north-west of the British Isles, low pressure remaining to the south or southeast. This scenario should see western and northern Britain becoming drier and sunnier with some pleasant warmth, whilst southern England see further outbreaks of rain and rather cloudy, if occasionally humid conditions for the most part. The beginning of June sees the greatest potential for something akin to summer as high pressure builds through the UK, this lingering into the second week of the month. So a spell of summer weather establishes and it becomes rather warm everywhere, this may not be long-lived as cooler and showery weather seeps south-eastward on a north-westerly, the result of high pressure retreating westward into the mid-Atlantic. *.................22/05/2012* Through this shorter term period there really doesn't look like there'll be any let up in the rather unsettled weather. Low pressure will be in control of the pattern and this will generate further spells of rain, some of on the heavy side accompanied by strong to fresh winds at times as the systems track close to or over the UK. Temperatures will be variable, occasionally warm and humid as the systems pass through, cooler and fresher as the systems clear into a north-westerly flow. Any drier and brighter conditions are expected to be transitory, clearer skies overnight coinciding with more northerly sourced air will lead to the threat of ground and a limited air frosts. *23/05/2012.....02/06/12 * It is through this period when a pattern shift is expected to take place, high pressure should feature more strongly in the forecast, although it is anticipated to be too far away to the west to bring any reasonable warmth to the UK just yet. Low pressure should remain as a feature to the south and south-east, this coupled with a developing region of high pressure to the west or northwest of the British Isles will swing the flow around to the north or northwest across western Britain, potentially an east to north-easterly across more southern and eastern areas. Western and north-western Britain will be the most favoured regions to see the best of any drier and brighter conditions, given shelter and lengthy sunnier spells it'll be pleasantly warm. Eastern and southern Britain will be cloudier at times with outbreaks of rain and a keen north to north-easterly breeze at times; this will make it feel distinctly cool across coastal areas exposed to the cloud, rain and wind. Sheltered areas will fair more favourably with sunnier breaks and lighter winds, seeing more in the way of drier spells too later. *03/06/2012 - 10/06/2012* Summer should arrive here for more of the UK, although at first there may be a hangover of cloud and cool conditions across southern and eastern Britain. High pressure to the west should drift into the British Isles, all area becoming dry and sunny. Light winds and lengthy sunny spells will make if feel warm, locally very warm later as a more southerly flow establishes. Coastal areas may become cloudier and cooler at times with an onshore breeze, some showers developing too. These may become quite widespread through inlands areas later in the period for a time, triggered by some imported warm and humid air off the near Continent. *10/06/2012 - 15/06/2012* The early summer weather may not hold beyond this period. High pressure looks as if it'll be on the decline and 'drift', edging slowly westwards allowing cooler and fresher conditions to seep south and east on a developing and potentially keen north-westerly. The flow then gently swings into a mainly westerly orientated direction with some cloud and patchy rain approaching western and north-western Britain, the remainder of the UK seeing broken cloud and a scattering of showers. Simon & Capn Bob Email me at simon.keeling@weatheronline.co.uk

Seasonal outlook: Fair start to June - Good end to July, Apr 21 - 16:39

*June* The meteorological first month of summer, should see high pressure in control and some semblance of summery weather for all areas, these very warm and settled conditions should extend through the first week to ten days of the month. High pressure atop the UK at first should slowly drift westward with a cooler and showery regime then establishing into the middle of month, a noticeable temperature drop for all areas as a northerly flow develops. The middle of the month sees a more westerly orientated flow then establishing, low pressure potentially ramping up the breeze, rain and windier weather affecting all areas and feeling much cooler beneath the cloud and rainier spots. This unsettled weather looks as if it'll be continuing through the remainder of June, only at the close of the month does it potentially settle once more, temperatures recovering as pressure builds in from the west, southern and eastern areas seeing the best of the conditions. *July* High pressure remains tantalisingly close to the UK, but just too far to the west to settle the weather into what one would normally expect for high summer. Cool with a breeze from the north or northwest, showers mainly for all areas but some indication of destabilisation at times into rather more organised showery bands. The west seeing fewer showers closest to high pressure established to the west. Through to the middle of the month sees a reversal of fortunes with high pressure building across the UK and then to the settling to the east, a much warmer regime establishing across the bulk of the country as a southerly flow develops for a time. Then unfortunately it's all downhill low pressure to the west encroaching eastward, showers breaking out widely then more organised rain as the Atlantic influence kicks in once more. Showers or longer spells of rain for all for a time through to the final week of July when the pattern attempts to redeem itself but I have my doubts whether it'll really make it, 'indifferent' would be the best term? Simon Email me at simon.keeling@weatheronline.co.uk

Mean maximum temperature for April ranged from 13.4°C at Southampton National Oceanographic Centre to 6.9°C at Lerwick (Shetland), while mean minimum temperature varied between 7.2°C at St Mary's (Isles of Scilly) and minus 0.1°C at Dalwhinnie (Inverness-shire) and Braemar (Aberdeenshire). Mean monthly temperature was 0.5-1.5degC below the 1981-2010 normal in all parts of the country, with a slightly larger deficit by day than by night. The Central England Temperature (CET) of 7.3°C was 1.2 degC below the long-term mean and the lowest in April since 1989. In the last 100 years 19 Aprils were colder while 81 were warmer.

The highest maximum at a standard site (i.e excluding rooftop and mountain sites) in the UK occurred on the afternoon of the 30th with a reading of 19.7°C at Kew Gardens (London), while the lowest minimum was minus 8.2°C at Braemar (Aberdeenshire) early on the 5th. The lowest daytime maximum was 0.3°C at Carter Bar (Roxburghshire) on the 3rd and at Pennerley (Salop) on the 4th, while the warmest night was that of 26th/27th with a minimum of 10.0°C at St Catherine's Point (Isle of Wight).

Rainfall averaged over England and Wales during April was 140.4mm which is 216 per cent of the average for the standard reference period 1981-2010, the highest for this month since 2000; since useful rainfall records began in 1727 April has been wetter only in 2000 and 1756. The equivalent figures for Scotland were 90mm and 152 per cent of the normal amount, and for Northern Ireland 63mm and 112 per cent. Monthly totals at routinely-available sites varied between 290mm at Liscombe (Somerset) and 31mm at Auchincruive (Ayrshire).

Sunshine averaged over England and Wales during April was 136 hours which is 87 per cent of the 1981-2010 mean, making this the dullest April since 1998. In the last 100 years there have been 15 duller Aprils while 85 have been sunnier. The equivalent figures for Scotland were 135 hours and 83 per cent, and for Northern Ireland 198 hours and 113 per cent. Largest total in the UK was 237 hours at Tiree (Inner Hebrides) and the smallest was 71 hours at Dyce (Aberdeenshire) - a new low record for the site.

Strong winds occurred on the 3rd, 4th and 29th; the highest known gust was 66 knots at Warcop (Cumbria) on the 29th.
